Vixen’s Scream
Deborah Trent, 2024 · Watercolor on paper
I often hear foxes screaming in the woods at night. They don’t howl like wolves; instead, females give a high-pitched scream during mating season to attract males.

Those piercing screams will jolt you awake in the middle of the night.
Artistic Process
This piece required extensive layering and grainer work. I typically apply one color per day, step back to review, then glaze additional color over the top—saving the fine detail for last.
- Brushes: ¼" grainer; Round 0, 2; Fan 2; ½" stroke.
- Paints: Payne’s Grey, Titanium White, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Orange, Burnt Sienna, Lunar Black, Cadmium Yellow, Ivory Black, Van Dyke Brown.
