Turtle Shell
Deborah Trent, 2024 · Watercolor / PearlEx / Pen on paper
One hot summer day, a turtle wandered under my fence and into the backyard. I couldn’t figure out what my dog was so intent on along the fenceline—until I spotted the visitor. The turtle played a wary game of peek-a-boo, ducking his head in and out of his armored shell while my dog investigated.

Inspiration
Beautiful coloration and a glossy shine on the turtle’s shell.
Artistic Process
I chose to focus on a single section of the shell to study its colors and markings up close.
- Tools: Micron Black 0.5 pen.
- Paints: Lunar Black, Van Dyke Brown, Cadmium Orange, Manganese Blue Hue, Hansa Yellow, PearlEx Aztec Gold.
Reflections
I gently rescued him and returned him to the woods where he belonged.
