Terek at the Wild Cat Sanctuary
Deborah Trent, 2023 · Acrylic on canvas
A bold, direct portrait of Terek, a resident of the Wildcat Sanctuary in Sandstone, Minnesota. The work departs from the artist's usual watercolor practice, using acrylic's opacity to build the tiger's face in confident strokes of black, warm sienna, and soft grey against the bright, unpainted canvas. Strong graphic striping frames the face and draws the eye inward, where luminous yellow irises meet the viewer with quiet, appraising intensity. The loose, gestural handling of the fur keeps the image feeling immediate and alive — a portrait rather than a study. This piece continues the artist's ongoing relationship with the sanctuary, following two earlier big cat portraits gifted to the organization the previous year in recognition of the work they do for rescued wild felines.

Reflections
This nonprofit rescues surrendered and confiscated big cats, giving them a permanent, safe home. Sadly, many exotics are still purchased online for private ownership.
