Acrylic painting of a sunflower.

Sunflower

Deborah Trent, 2022 · Acrylic on canvas

Not a Van Gogh—but a lively piece that captures the radiance and light these giant flowers bring, enough to make you smile. As the blossoms droop and dry at day’s end, their seeds become a welcome feast for birds and other wildlife.

Inspiration

Inspired by Van Gogh’s sunflowers, this piece aims to capture the same radiant joy—bright, lively blooms that lift the spirit and make you smile.

Artistic Process

I let the paint run free—aiming for a radiant sunburst from the flower. I needed a lift, so I switched from my usual mediums to acrylic and embraced loose, full-arm strokes with vivid color. It was an experiment in pure expression, trusting movement and light to carry the piece.

  • Brushes: Round 6, Round 8, ¾" Faux Oval.
  • Paints: Cadmium Orange Hue, Cadmium Red Medium Hue, Green Light Permanent, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Black, White, Cadmium Yellow.

Reflections

The radiant light of these giant flowers can’t help but make you smile. I don’t often work in acrylic, but this was a joy—and the large canvas now hangs in my home.
