Squirrel
Deborah Trent, 2026 · Watercolor on paper
A loose, expressive portrait of a red squirrel captured in warm russet washes and soft grey shadows. The bleeding edges of the pigment suggest the animal's fluffy coat and tufted ears, while sharp detail in the glossy black eyes and whiskers brings the face forward with quiet alertness. The interplay of controlled wash and watercolor's natural unpredictability gives the piece its spontaneous, alive quality.
