This is one of my earliest pieces. I wanted to paint a beautiful sunset. Though I don’t live near the water, I kept hearing the old forecast saying: “Red sky at night, sailors’ delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.”

Inspiration
A good friend of mine—also an artist—owned a sailboat.
Artistic Process
I began with the sky, working wet-on-wet—lots of water.
- Brushes: Round 2; 1" stroke.
- Paints: Payne’s Grey, Opera, Manganese Blue Hue, Cadmium Yellow, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna.
Reflections
Sunsets over water are daily masterpieces that never grow old.
