Pheasant

Deborah Trent, 2026 · Watercolor on paper

A dynamic portrait of a rooster pheasant flushed from cover, wings beating against a pale, overcast sky. Rich russet and copper tones define the body, detailed with the speckled white and black markings characteristic of the species, while the iconic emerald head and crimson wattle provide a jewel-like focal point. The long, barred tail feathers trail behind in graceful counterbalance to the lifted wings, capturing the unmistakable silhouette of a bird in full flight. Below, golden prairie grasses are suggested with dry, sweeping brushstrokes that evoke the rustle of the bird's sudden departure. The composition pairs careful anatomical observation with the loose energy of the medium, giving the piece both authenticity and movement.

Inspiration

Although I don’t hunt, I know several people who enjoy pheasant hunting with their dogs. I occasionally see pheasants dart across the road—and catch a glimpse of their beautiful plumage when they take flight.

Artistic Process

I used tracing paper to capture the bird’s markings and feather structure. Working out the details in watercolor was challenging on my first attempt.

Reflections

I liked capturing the motion of the bird being flushed and lifting into the sky. I added grasses to ground the scene and give it a more realistic sense of perspective.
