Watercolor painting of a Laddie, black Labrador retriever.

Laddie

Deborah Trent, 2026 · Watercolor on paper

A tender, affectionate portrait of a black Labrador, rendered in layered washes of charcoal, slate, and deep indigo. The dark coat is built up gradually, with softer greys catching the light across the muzzle and brow, while one ear falls forward in a gesture of gentle curiosity. Warm amber eyes anchor the composition, bringing unmistakable personality to the face, and a bright turquoise collar offers a single, perfectly placed note of color against the subdued palette. The loose, cloud-like edges of the figure let the subject emerge softly from the paper, giving the piece both intimacy and quiet presence.

The work was painted from a personal photo of the artist's rescue Black Lab, Laddie — a six-year-old with plenty of energy who loves his walks on the Munger Trail and chasing squirrels in the back yard. The portrait was composed with particular attention to the sincerity and expression in his eyes, in hopes of capturing the steadfast strength that defines him.

Inspiration

Laddie is my companion and shares our home with Anjou, my rescue cat.

Artistic Process

Sketch outline and layered applications of black were used to build values and depth in the facial features.

  • Paints: Magenta Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Cadmium Yellow, Van Dyke Brown.
  • Brushes: sizes 2 and 6; Round and Mop.

Reflections

I find it challenging to paint a black animal without the color appearing flat. I was especially pleased with how his eyes turned out.
