Kangaroo
Deborah Trent, 2026 · Watercolor on paper
A soft, affecting portrait of a young kangaroo rendered in gentle washes of dove grey, rust, and muted blue. The figure emerges from the paper with little hard edge or outline, the pigment pooling and blending to suggest form rather than describe it — a technique that captures both the plush softness of the coat and the quiet, watchful presence of the animal. Warm rust tones at the ears, muzzle, and chest give the otherwise cool palette its heartbeat, while the large, liquid black eyes — rimmed with delicate, dark lashes — carry the emotional weight of the piece. Fine whiskers and the distinctive heart-shaped nose are drawn with careful restraint, finishing the face without overworking it. The result is a portrait of remarkable tenderness, trading detail for atmosphere and letting the viewer meet the subject in a moment of mutual stillness.
