Inspiration

Hummingbirds zip through the yard while I’m outside—some dart straight to the feeder, others perch on the shepherd’s hook to rest, and many head right for the blooming flowers.

Artistic Process

First attempt at painting these tiny dynamos—so much to learn!

  • Brushes: Round 2; ½" grainer.
  • Paints: Sap Green, Ultramarine Purple, Terra Cotta Rose, Lunar Black, Ivory Black, Cadmium Yellow, Phthalocyanine Green, Cadmium Red, Manganese Blue Hue.

Reflections

Hummingbirds fly 20–30 miles per hour and can even hover and fly backward. Their navigation at those speeds is remarkable.
