Great Horned Owl

Deborah Trent, 2024 · Watercolor on paper

In the spirit of my first owl, this Great Horned Owl fixes you with its gaze.

Inspiration

I find an owl’s gaze deeply calming—their eyes are so beautifully large.

Artistic Process

I started with a simple outline, placing the eyes and nose as the focal points, then built up the feathering in layered strokes.

  • Brushes: Round 2; ¼" grainer.
  • Paints: Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White, Van Dyke Brown.

Reflections

Great Horned Owls are found throughout Minnesota and are easily recognized by their yellow eyes, prominent ear tufts, and deep hooting call—“hoo… hoo-hoo… hoo.”
