Giant Panda
Deborah Trent, 2026 · Watercolor on paper
A tender, close-cropped portrait of a giant panda rendered almost entirely in ink-black and the warm cream of the paper itself. The soft, feathered edges of the fur are built through loose, bristling brushwork, the pigment bleeding outward to suggest the dense shag of the panda's coat without hard outlines. The signature dark patches around the eyes and ears anchor the composition, while the unpainted face is left open and luminous — a subtle warm wash lending just enough tone to the cheeks and brow to bring the form forward. The eyes, rendered with quiet precision, carry the gentle, slightly mournful quality that makes the species so instantly recognizable. A study in restraint, the piece lets the medium and the paper do much of the work, trusting negative space to carry the weight of the portrait.
Inspiration
I created a series of whimsical, adorable animals—purely for fun.
Artistic Process
I started with a loose sketch and aimed for a soft, fuzzy, cuddly feel in this painting.

- Brushes: Round (1, 2, 6), mop, ½" filbert grainer
Reflections
The paw raised to the mouth, paired with the faintest hint of a grin, captures exactly the mood I wanted to convey.
