Ducklings at the Pond
Deborah Trent, 2022 · Watercolor on paper
Two ducklings discovering the world with simple, open innocence. When my son was young, we often fed the ducks at Lake Como and watched them paddle about—pure, small joys that stayed with me.
Inspiration
Spring carries the promise of new beginnings after a long winter, when the whole earth seems to awaken from its slumber. Whether it’s spotting the first daffodil, hearing frogs croak, or catching the fresh scent of new grass, these ducklings are a reminder of those simple, joyful pleasures.
Artistic Process
I grappled with capturing the reflections on moving water and the ducklings’ backlit shadows—this was one of my earlier pieces.
- Brushes: Round 2, fan, and 1" wash.
- Paints: Hansa Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, Van Dyke Brown, Ultramarine Blue.
Reflections
Although I don’t often paint waterfowl, ducks with distinctive markings—especially on the water—are a subject I’m eager to explore.
