Deer
Deborah Trent, 2026 · Watercolor on paper
A quiet, arresting portrait of a young doe emerging from a soft wash of spring green. Warm earth tones and subtle pinks build the form of her face, while fine drybrush strokes across the forehead and muzzle suggest the delicate texture of her coat. The large, dark eyes and velvet nose are rendered with careful attention, drawing the viewer into a moment of mutual stillness. Loose, atmospheric pigment in the background dissolves any sense of place, leaving only the alert presence of the animal herself.
Inspiration
Capturing the deer’s big eyes and soulful, direct gaze.
Artistic Process
I begin with a loose sketch, then build up the details through layered applications.

Reflections
I feel a strong connection to deer—their beauty and quiet grace. In winter, I love watching them gather at the edge of the woods by my home. I set out feed during the harshest months, and this year there were about eight visitors, including a set of young triplets.
