Deborah Trent, 2025 · Watercolor on paper

I hope to visit Japan someday. This piece captures spring blossom season—people strolling through the park beneath a canopy of blooms.

Inspiration

Japan’s sakura Season.

Artistic Process

I experimented with different ways to dot the blossoms and found the best results came from a simple cotton swab—more control and softer, fuller blooms than a brush could give.

  • Brushes: Round (0, 1, 2); cotton swabs (Q-tips) for blossoms.
  • Paints: Cadmium Red, Van Dyke Brown, Ivory Black, Sap Green, Titanium White, Payne’s Grey, Mayan Blue, Opera.

Reflections

Sakura season lasts about a month, sweeping from south to north, with peak bloom typically lasting around two weeks.
