Blue Bird

Deborah Trent, 2022 · Watercolor on paper

A vivid, intimate study of a bluebird captured in profile, its brilliant cobalt plumage emerging against a soft wash of summer greens and yellows. The saturated blues are built in bold, gestural strokes that catch the character of the feathers — at once sleek and slightly ruffled — while the dark, glistening eye and sharp beak anchor the face with quiet precision. The loose, sunlit background evokes a high-canopy woodland in full leaf, suggesting dappled light filtering through old trees rather than depicting any specific place.

The painting comes from a personal memory of the artist's years in Ham Lake, Minnesota, where each summer a single bluebird would return to the yard beneath an old-growth canopy. Its arrival was never guaranteed and never predictable — a fleeting, almost impossibly blue visitor against the green of the woods. This piece is a remembrance of that bird: the bluest of birds, briefly present, long held in memory.

Inspiration

I often paint birds—especially the visitors to my backyard. They bring such joy: the songs that promise spring is near, the midnight “who! who!” of an owl in the woods, the bright morning melody of an oriole. Their vivid plumage and astonishing long-distance migrations never cease to amaze me.

Artistic Process

I wrestled with the beak, sketching it several times, and—as usual—completed a couple of watercolor studies before nailing the boldness of the blue and the eye’s reflection.

  • Brushes: grainer/rake, round sable, and a Princeton Stroke 1" for the background, finished with a light cotton-ball dab.
  • Paints: Lunar Black, Ultramarine Blue, and Sap Green.

Reflections

Though just 5" × 7", this piece remains one of my favorites.
