Barn Owl
Deborah Trent, 2026 · Watercolor on paper
A quiet, atmospheric portrait of a barn owl emerging from a warm wash of amber and soft grey. The bird's heart-shaped facial disc — the species' unmistakable signature — is built from the lightest of washes, with the white of the paper doing much of the work, while the dark, liquid eyes gaze out from their russet-rimmed sockets with characteristic barn owl solemnity. The body is suggested rather than fully described: pale breast feathers dappled with fine flecks of pigment, a hint of golden-buff along the wings, and edges that dissolve softly into the surrounding color field. The golden-ochre background evokes the warm light of a hayloft at dusk — the owl's ancestral habitat — without committing to any specific setting. The overall effect is hushed and reverent, a portrait that feels as much about presence and stillness as it does about the bird itself.
Inspiration
My love and fascination for owls is evident in so many of my paintings. For this piece, I wanted to create a magical, dreamy background in my favorite colors, yellow and gray. Reference photo: Bruno van der Kraan, Unsplash.
Artistic Process
A loose sketch and a few softened, lost edges create a sense of airiness within the atmospheric background (my first attempt at this technique). The blooms in the gray background were intentional.
- Paints: Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Van Dyke Brown.
- Brushes: sizes 0, 1, 2, and 6; Round and Mop.
Reflections
I was pleased with how this owl turned out.
