Baby Llama

Deborah Trent, 2026 · Watercolor on paper

A sweet, disarming portrait of a young llama cria rendered in warm washes of russet and sienna against the untouched white of the paper. Fine, feathered brushstrokes radiate outward from the face to suggest the soft, woolly texture of the coat, while delicate speckles along the bridge of the nose add a quiet note of realism. The oversized ears — one tipped slightly forward, the other back — give the piece its gentle, curious character, and the small heart-shaped muzzle provides an almost accidental focal point of tenderness. The large, dark eyes with their amber centers are rendered with careful attention, meeting the viewer with the unguarded openness of a very young animal. A study in warmth and simplicity, the piece leans on the expressive possibilities of a single color family to carry both the form and the feeling.
